Green Building Codes and Standards: Improving Hazard Resistance or Creating Design Challenges?
Sun. 3:30-5:00 p.m., Spruce
The International Code Council-700 Green Building Standard, ICC International Green Construction Code (publication anticipated in 2011), and the International Energy Conservation Code are examples of construction documents that will increasingly influence the way buildings are built. The term green is generally viewed as synonymous with improved performance, particularly for energy efficiency, resource efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and site development. Does green translate into greater resistance to natural hazards or does it present design challenges for such resistance? The panel will address key green codes, energy codes, and standards, focusing on positive and negative interactions between green or energy efficient provisions and natural hazard loss reduction.
