Hurricane Sandy: Impacts, Response, and Recovery

Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest storm of the 2012 hurricane season. Total losses have yet to be tallied, but estimates indicate that Sandy is the second most costly hurricane in U.S. history, after Katrina. Events surrounding Sandy raise a host of questions in areas such as the future impacts of combined storm surges and sea-level rise in built-up coastal areas; the ways in which unsustainable coastal development practices contribute to escalating storm losses; the extent to which lessons learned from disasters are reflected in post-disaster recovery activities; the impact of policies and programs such as the new National Recovery Framework; and the extent to which knowledge on climate change can be incorporated into disaster recovery plans.
