The 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake was the most devastating earthquake of the 20th Century for Taiwan. It caused tremendous damage, claimed thousands of lives, and leveled tens of thousands of homes.
During and after the disaster, the inadequacies of the island’s emergency response system and disaster mitigation practices became painfully clear. Therefore, in the past decade, prevention and reduction of natural disasters and disaster area reconstruction have been among the top priorities of the government.
