Louise Liang-Jung Wei is a research fellow at Taiwan’s National Science Council (NSC). Wei received her bachelor’s from National Taiwan University in 1974 and master’s from University of Minnesota in 1978. She worked as an associate research fellow in NSC’s Division of Planning and Evaluation. She was in charge of two interdisciplinary programs—one between material science and electronics, the other included organic chemistry, agriculture, and biological science—which were the first large-scale interdisciplinary programs initiated by NSC.

These experiences later led Wei into natural hazard mitigation programs. In 1988, with NSC’s support, she pursued further study, receiving her PhD from National Chung-Hsing University in 1993. Wei’s experience in biology led to her being chosen to help set up the National Laboratory Animal Breeding and Research Center, a branch of the NSC. In 1997, she was appointed as deputy executive secretary of NSC’s Sustainable Development Commission. The commission promoted and executed programs related to sustainability, such as natural hazard mitigation, environmental protection, and global change. Since then, Wei has acquired an understanding of hazard programs and established a close collaboration network with scientists in the field.
