Public vs. Clinical Health Emergency Preparedness and Response: Which is the Most Effective?

Tue. 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Centennial F

This session will focus on the health community's response to short-term, high-impact events, such as severe weather and earthquakes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention traditionally provide a public health approach to the preparation for and response to these disasters focused on mass communication and the media. The clinical approach is represented by emergency managers, who use National Weather Service guidance during predicted severe weather events to advise public sectors (such as health) by communicating with individual health care facilities and emergency medical services. This session will discuss the role and effectiveness of both approaches in preparedness and response to short-term disasters.
