Joanne Stevenson, a native of Chicago, obtained her bachelor’s of science degree in natural resource and environmental sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Her interest in the study of hazards and emergency management was piqued after beginning her honor’s degree undergraduate thesis examining the role and efficacy of Community Emergency Response Teams in Illinois.

Following graduation from the University of Illinois in 2007, Stevenson spent a year working and traveling in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Europe. During this time, she held a research position at the University of Dundee in Scotland, examining insurance losses from flooding in the United Kingdom and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency’s Hi-Flows program.

Stevenson is currently pursuing a master’s degree in geography at the University of South Carolina and working with the Hazards and Vulnerability and Research Institute.  Her research interests include social vulnerability, long-term recovery trends, and emergency management.  Following the completion of her degree, Stevenson plans move to New Zealand, where she hopes to continue her career in hazards and emergency management research.  In her spare time, Stevenson plays competitive rugby and represented the USA South All-Star Women’s Rugby Team this year at the Women’s Championships.
