volunteer call

Although we know that it can be difficult for students to find the funding to attend workshops and conferences, the Natural Hazards Center has always appreciated hearing the voices of the next generation of professionals in our field. That’s why we’ve created two opportunities to assist students in attending our annual Natural Hazards Workshop.

If you are a student, or if you know one, please read on to see the ways students can affordably join us at the 2017 Workshop on July 9-12 in Broomfield, Colorado.

Annual Hazards and Disasters Student Paper Competition
The Student Paper Competition accepts undergraduate and graduate student papers, literature reviews, theoretical arguments, case studies, or descriptions of research results on the social and behavioral aspects of hazards and disasters. Papers are judged on originality, organization, and knowledge of the topic. Two winners will receive $100, free registration to the Natural Hazards Workshop, and publication of the winning entry on the Natural Hazards Center website. The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2017.

For more information on the award and guidelines, see the Student Paper Competition on the Natural Hazards Center website.

Student Workshop Volunteer Openings
Student volunteers at the Workshop provide technical assistance, timekeeping, administrative help and do other tasks as needed. Preference is given to candidates with a strong work ethic and a demonstrated sense of professionalism. Competition for these limited spots is stiff, so please submit your thoughtful applications soon!

Those chosen to volunteer receive free workshop registration and meals—a $345 value—and the opportunity to network with some of most respected professionals in the field. Lodging and transportation are the responsibility of attendees. The deadline to submit applications is March 10, 2017.
