Wireless Emergency Alerts: The Edge of the Wave

Mon. 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Fir

The Wireless Emergency Alert system is a public safety system that became available in April 2012. The system allows customers who own WEA-enabled wireless telephones and other mobile devices to receive geo-targeted, text-like messages alerting them of imminent threats in the area where they are physically located. Since its release, multiple research projects have been funded by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Communications Commission to better understand the system, how it is implemented, and how it can be used to protect life and property. This panel will report on questions asked, methods used, and progress made to date by a selection of these projects.
