Francisco Vidal-Franceschi (She/They/He) is a fourth year anthropology and sociology undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. His main interest lies in sociolinguistics with a focus on the sociolinguistics of disaster and queer sociolinguistics. Currently, Francisco is employed as a research assistant at the Salvador Padilla Escabí Graduate School of Planning at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. There, as part of a collaboratory, they are focused on leading social research on disaster in Puerto Rico, specializing in topics such as: risk communication in concurrent disasters, decision making, and community co-production of knowledge.
In the summer of 2023, Francisco will join the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) cohort at the University of Colorado Boulder Natural Hazards Center and CONVERGE Facility. They will be mentored by PhD Candidate, Melissa Villarreal. In addition, Francisco is a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) Fellow, where she leads a personal research project about inclusive language, lavender languages, and code switching as processes of disidentification and survival within the Puerto Rican trans, queer, and marginalized gender youth.
