Steve Kroll-Smith is currently professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro and formerly a research professor of sociology at the University of New Orleans. His latest book is Left to Chance with Vern Baxter and Pam Jenkins. His work on human-made hazards was recognized by the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Contribution Award for research on environments and technologies. His first book, The Real Disaster is Above Ground with Steve Couch, was listed in the American Library Association's Outstanding Top 10 Book List for 1990. Steve is a past editor of Sociological Inquiry and recipient of the Alpha Kappa Delta Distinguished Service Award. He is also a recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. In 2014 he received the UNCG Academic Inclusiveness Award.
