Alexander “Sandy” Smart, is a professor of rangeland ecology and management and assistant department head of the Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University. He has over 30 years of research experience in grazing, pasture/rangeland improvements, forage quality assessment, and prescribed fire. He has taught ranch management, grassland fire ecology, wildlife habitat management, and grazing management. Smart has served as coordinator for the USDA Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program in South Dakota, as a science advisor to the South Dakota Grassland Coalition, and has been actively involved in committees of the Society for Range Management.
