Diego Zavala’s work focuses on violence and injury prevention, surveillance systems, and cancer research. He participated in cancer etiology research in Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay, and Costa Rica. He currently oversees two surveillance systems in Puerto Rico: Violent Deaths Reporting System, and Central Cancer Registry. He has participated on ImPACT Review missions to Ecuador, Guyana, and Jamaica for the International Atomic Energy Agency and International Agency for Research on Cancer. He is a consultant to the United Nations Development Program on projects related to cancer surveillance system assessments, and injury and violence prevention. Zavala was a guest speaker on two Parliamentary Forums on Small Arms and Light Weapons in the Americas region.
