Joel Hartter is a human-environment geographer who joined the environmental studies program as an associate professor in 2014 after working as an assistant/associate professor at the University of New Hampshire for 6 ½ years. Hartter received his PhD in geography from the University of Florida. His research program focuses on human behavior, land use/land cover change, population change and migration, conservation and protected area management, and increasingly human health as well as wildfires in the US West. He has active projects in East and Southern Africa, Madagascar, and the Inland Northwest of the US. Hartter is also the faculty director for the Masters of the Environment professional graduate degree program.
