Michele (Micki) Olson is a doctoral student in the college of communication and information at the University of Kentucky. Her work focuses on message design, persuasion, and risk communication in times of imminent threat. Specifically, she investigates how to make warning messages more persuasive through incorporating persuasive message design theories and principles. Other research interests include the role of governmental engagement on social media during non-threat periods and the utility of visual risk communication during weather events.
In addition, she is a member of the HEROIC team (funded through the National Science Foundation) and examines alerts and warnings disseminated through terse messaging channels and social media. Before joining the University of Kentucky, she received her bachelor’s degree in communication and psychology, and master’s degree in communication from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
