Getting a grip on resilience is a daunting task. Resilience can be defined as the ability to cope with disturbances. But, what exactly is meant by coping? Vulnerability and adaptability are so-called emergent properties that cannot be attributed to a single entity. We deal with a multi-faceted world, including communities, infrastructure, and economics that interact in complex ways. The question is how can we model this complexity to get a handle on resilience? How can we find the levers and indicators with which we can decrease vulnerability and increase adaptability?
