Canterbury Earthquakes: Research and Lessons
Mon. 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Centennial E
The Canterbury-Christchurch earthquake sequence of 2010-2011 was the most catastrophic series of extreme events in the history of New Zealand. The Canterbury earthquakes and aftershocks destroyed approximately 50 percent of the buildings in the central business district of Christchurch, the nation’s second-largest city; caused widespread liquefaction that led to bans on rebuilding in affected areas; and resulted in extensive residential and business displacement. Speakers in this session will provide updates on ongoing research on the earthquakes and their impacts.
