Risk Communication: The Earthquake Context

Tue. 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Centennial E

Earthquakes are low-probability, potentially high cost events that present distinctive risk communication challenges in non-disaster times, when they occur, and when aftershock advisories are issued. For example, what are the best ways to communicate risk-related information in what might be long periods between earthquake events? How should aftershock-related information be disseminated in situations with numerous after events, such as the Christchurch earthquake sequence? What makes members of the public pay attention to and act on communication regarding earthquake hazards? Panelists will discuss these challenges and possible solutions.
