Edith Bretherton

Edith Bretherton is a senior natural hazard planner at Earth Sciences New Zealand (formerly the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited Science). She works in applied and foundation research linking science with land use planning practice in local and national initiatives. Bretherton leads research projects and provides guidance on implementation of risk-based approaches to natural hazard risk management including residual risk. She is currently completing a secondment with the Ministry for the Environment providing natural hazard advice for regulatory reform.
Bretherton participates in civil defense exercises and response for Earth Sciences New Zealand and for the West Coast region of New Zealand. Her experiences in disaster response informs her research, looking for ways to better understand and communicate hazard information in response, recovery and building greater resilience.
