Gari Mayberry

Gari Mayberry is the coordinator for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Volcano Hazards Program. The program’s mission is to enhance public safety and minimize social and economic disruption from volcanic unrest and eruptions in the United States. The program monitors the United States’ approximately 170 potentially volcanoes at five volcano observatories and the international state department-USGS Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP) helps partners monitor volcanoes worldwide. Mayberry previously served as a liaison between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and USGS, where she managed VDAP and developed the USAID-USGS earthquake and Landslide Disaster Assistance Teams. She also led the USAID/Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction Team, which addresses issues related to international geological and meteorological hazards and general disaster risk reduction issues, including climate change. She began her career at USGS as the creator and editor of the Smithsonian Institution-USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report. She received her B.A. in earth and environmental science from Wesleyan University, and her M.S. in geological sciences from Michigan Technological University.
