Katy Wood

Katy L. Wood is a wildland fire dispatcher and wildland fire Prevention Education Team Member living in Grand Junction, Colorado. As a dispatcher, she helps coordinate responses to wildland fires in the Upper Colorado River area of Colorado. Through her work with Prevention Education Teams, she goes out around the country to work with communities experiencing high incidents of human caused wildfires and works with the team to create and deploy a variety of new educational initiatives and assets specific to that community and their problem. On these teams she specializes in the development of visual assets such as brochures, social media posts, flyers, and SWAG for events.

Independently, Wood develops additional disaster education based assets and studies the sociological aspects of how we tell the stories of disaster, both in fiction and non-fiction, across all mediums from art to writing to film. She is an advocate for better understanding how different types of communication assets can be best used in disaster related contexts before, during, and after disasters.
