Peter M Powers

U.S. Geological Survey

Peter Powers is a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) where he oversees technical development and implementation of the National Seismic Hazard Model. In this role, Powers integrates best-available science into probabilistic models of seismic hazard for the U.S. and its territories and manages the workflow from research through to model publication. This work includes the software development necessary for the calculation of nationwide hazard datasets for use in building code applications, and deployment of the models into online web services and applications. Prior to joining the USGS, Powers worked in both the mining and tech sectors before attending the University of Southern California, from which he received a PhD in geophysics and seismology. In his time at the USGS, Powers has been involved in development of the pilot version of the Global Earthquake Model and the Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast version 3.
