Shunichi Koshimura

Shunichi Koshimura is a professor at International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University. At Tohoku, he is also a Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering. Koshimura teaches classes on Disaster and Emergency Management, Coastal Engineering, and Numerical Modeling. His research focuses on "Real-time Disaster Science" that aims to assess the social impacts of natural disasters by fusion of numerical modeling, earth observation, and geo-informatics with High Performance Computing Infrastructure.
Koshimura is a co-founder and chief technology officer of Real-Time Innovation (RTi)-cast, a university-based technology start-up that offers real-time tsunami inundation damage forecast services (TsunamiCast) to government organizations and commercial clients. RTi-cast is officially licensed by Japan Meteorological Agency to provide tsunami forecast services. In 2025, he founded another tech start-up, Terra-cast LLC, to expand TsunamiCast capability to all over the world.
Koshimura received PhD from the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University in 2000. After graduating Tohoku University, he started his career as a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science research fellow in Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo, and in Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. In 2005, He joined the Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University as an associate professor, then in 2012, International Research Institute of Disaster Science, Tohoku University, as a full professor.
