Supriya Akerkar's work focuses on how preparedness, risk reduction, resilience building and responses to disasters be made more inclusive ensuring that affected marginalised groups including women, gender diverse persons, older persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities are supported and empowered in and through these processes. Akerkar's work in the United Kingdom and the global south including complex contexts of conflicts intersecting with natural hazards such as flooding and droughts. Akerkar also works with subaltern and decolonial lenses privileging forms of marginalised knowledge often excluded from dominant ways of understanding and responding to disasters.
