Adapting Transportation Networks to Climate Variability

Tue. 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Interlocken C

The transportation networks of bridges, roads, tunnels, railroads, ports, and airports are crucial for moving goods and people between communities and are critical in helping communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Yet many critical links in our networks are very vulnerable to extreme weather, as demonstrated in events from Hurricanes Katrina and Irene to Hurricane Sandy. As infrastructure ages, risks increase. This session will focus on climate science, lessons learned from U.S. and international experience, and steps that can be taken to harden U.S. infrastructure.
