Integrating Homeless Populations into Disaster Planning
Tue. 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Centennial E
People experiencing homelessness are particularly vulnerable during disasters due to poverty, lack of material resources and shelter, and physical and mental health conditions that can interfere with coping ability. Despite this increased risk, chronically homeless individuals are often neglected in emergency management planning and there is an urgent need for improvements in disaster care and service delivery. This session presents a new Toolkit for Homeless Disaster Preparedness and Planning that addresses that need. Panelists are subject matter experts who developed the Toolkit and will discuss how the kit provides strategies to ensure that the needs of homeless individuals are adequately addressed during disasters.
