The organizers of the Fourth International Conference on Urban Disaster Reduction are accepting abstracts for presentations at the event to be held October 17-20 in Wellington and Christchurch, New Zealand. Abstracts that describe bold strategies to reduce potential casualties, damage, and disruption from future disasters, and create resilient, adaptive communities are especially welcome. Junior faculty, young researchers, post-docs and advanced doctoral students with a strong interest and research experience in the disaster and risk field are encouraged to apply for the two-week program, which will take place July 25 to August 5 in Beijing, China. Modernizing HUD Planning to Increase Resilience to Natural Hazards

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is accepting comments on a proposed rule meant to modernize its planning process to narrow the digital divide and increase resilience to natural hazards. The rule would require state and local governments to evaluate the availability of broadband access in relation to the low- and moderate-income household vulnerability to natural hazard risk in their consolidated planning efforts.
