The Natural Hazards Center is excited to announce that registration for our 43rd Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop is now open. This year’s Workshop features a compelling theme, thought-provoking add-on events, and the same great conversations and networking opportunities it’s long been known for—we hope you’ll join us July 8-11 in Broomfield, Colorado.
We recognize that 2017 was an exceptional year for disasters and that there are many stories to be told, as well as many of us contemplating can improve approaches to mitigation, preparedness, and recovery. With that in mind, we posed Twenty Questions about how might think (and act!) differently in order to more effectively reduce the harm and suffering caused by disasters. The answers to those questions—sent in from community members from a range of disciplines, professions, and fields of interest—formed the basis of our 2018 Workshop schedule.

Registration: Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited, so please register before May 22—after that our early bird deadline will expire and prices will go up.
Hotel: You will want to reserve your room at the Omni Interlocken Hotel, as well. We’ve arranged for special pricing for Workshop registrants until June 6.

Special Events: We’ll have several special events at this year’s Workshop. On Sunday, spend the day on a Drought and Wildfire Tour of beautiful—yet hazard-prone and disaster-affected—areas in Boulder County. Then on Sunday evening, join us for an interactive listening session on data needed for better disaster response and hear the account of an effort that coordinated thousands of rescues during the 2017 hurricane season.
Late in the week, we’ll hold the Tuesday evening barbecue on the University of Colorado Boulder campus where you can mingle and enjoy great food and a breathtaking view of the mountains. On Wednesday morning, you can put on your running (or walking) shoes and join the Bill Anderson Fund for the fourth annual Disaster Dash 5K.
Researchers Meeting: This year we are collaborating with the International Research Committee on Disasters (IRCD) to host an add-on Researchers Meeting. The program will focus on National Science Foundation-funded RAPID studies and ways to improve the identification of research needs, research coordination, and data collection and sharing capabilities.
