Kyle Breen

Kyle Breen is a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He received his PhD in sociology and a graduate minor in environmental science from Louisiana State University in 2022. He received his undergraduate degree from Eastern Illinois University in sociology.

Breen's research interests center on environmental, disaster, and social justice, examining the structural and systemic forces that converge to create disproportionate disaster impacts. Specifically, his research focuses on historically marginalized communities in disasters (racial and ethnic minorities, gender and sexual minorities); educational impacts and academic disruptions to students caused by disasters, particularly in higher education; and volunteerism and aid in disaster and emergency contexts. Breen currently holds several grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council in Canada that focus on 2SLGBTQ+ students and disaster preparedness and resource needs as well as a project focusing on academic disruption for students subjected to crisis.
