Daniel Nilsson is a professor of fire engineering at the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. His research area is evacuation, which includes building, tunnel, wildland fire, and tsunami evacuation. Nilsson uses virtual reality techniques, but he has also performed evacuation experiments in both laboratory and field settings. Recent research includes investigations of the effectiveness of way-finding systems and alarms and the validation of virtual reality experiments for the study of evacuation. Nilsson has also been involved in studies using GPS data to explore evacuee decision making and route choice.
