Darien Williams is currently investigating the role of human error in large-scale natural gas pipeline and electric grid infrastructure disturbances as part of research supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Critical Resilient Interdependent Infrastructure Systems and Processes (CRISP 2.0) program. Recently, this research attention has turned to the recent Merrimack Valley gas explosions in Massachusetts, which led the research team to conduct case studies of similar events across the United States. Williams is also conducting interviews of volunteer experiences in the Florida panhandle following Hurricane Michael in 2018, a separate project supported by a Natural Hazards Center Quick Response Grant Program.
