Génesis Álvarez-Rosario is a licensed social worker and a doctoral student in the Beatriz Lasalle Graduate School of Social Work. She holds a bachelor's summa cum laude in social work, and a masters’ in social work from the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. 

Álvarez-Rosario was a research assistant for Centro de Investigaciones Sociales (CIS) at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP); the oldest and main social sciences research in the UPR system. At CIS, Álvarez-Rosario was a graduate fellow for the City of San Juan in the National Science Foundation Urban Resilience to Extremes Sustainability Research Network (URExSRN). During her years as a student, Álvarez-Rosario also worked as a research assistant for the projects ‘Efficacy of Informal Science Education practices to develop Hispanic citizen scientists in the watershed of the Río Grande of Manatí’, funded by the National Science Foundation, and ‘Integrating Traditional and Formal Knowledge: A Community Education Program on Climate Change for Puerto Rico’, funded by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
