Julie Sexton has a bachelor's and a master's degree in geology and a PhD in education. After her master's degree in geology, she worked as a geologist, community college instructor, and education and outreach coordinator. However, her experiences as a low-income, first-generation college student and as a woman in science sparked her interest in addressing systemic barriers to diversity and inclusivity in science. Ultimately, Sexton pursued a PhD in education with an emphasis on diversity and equity. She conducts education research focused on understanding the persistence, success, recruitment, and retention of minoritized and marginalized groups in geoscience, biology, and environmental studies.
