María L Lara Hernández is a full professor of the social sciences department of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao. She is a social community psychologist. Her research has been on the subjects of participatory democracy, inequality, and social change. Hernández was co-designer of the first and unique bachelor’s degree in participatory action research in PR.

Hernández is the director of Fundación Agenda Ciudadana, a national project that promotes participatory democracy and educates citizen competencies in all sectors.

Hernández has received many awards: Psychologist of the Year and Most Outstanding Psychologist in the area of Public Policy and Public Service.
