Nicole Mattson is an undergraduate at the University of Colorado at Boulder. As a double major in anthropology and psychology, she is interested in exploring the diverse ways in which people and institutions interact within the context of their many environments. A Colorado native, Nicole has a passion for the outdoors and is a licensed skydiver. She spent the summer studying conservation and indigenous peoples in Tanzania, camping with Maasai, Iraqw, and Hadza groups, and she conducted an individual ethnographic research project. She is particularly curious about how indigenous women dependent on the tourism industry along the northern safari circuit near Arusha, Tanzania could be affected by climate change. In addition to working at the Natural Hazards Center, she is also an undergraduate research assistant at the Arch Lab, which studies the efficacy of mindfulness and acceptance-based behavioral interventions for anxiety, stress, and coping with cancer.
