Shanasia Sylman has a master's in urban planning from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and bachelor's in environmental engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Recently, she started a job with the National Park Service as a outdoor recreation planner. Sylman works within a service-wide planning division and focuses on planning projects that deal with the improvement and sustainability of park facilities and operations. She has the wonderful opportunity to work parks across the country and assists them with solving emerging park issues. Sylman is am still within the first year of her job and has a lot to learn along the way, but is working to better integrate climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness into national park unit planning. Luckily, she has her experience with the Minority Scholars from Under-Represented Groups in Engineering and Social Sciences United States Virgin Island disaster reconnaissance effort and her master's research on the recovery of Houston, Texas post-Hurricane Harvey to draw from.
