Sydney Eiss is an undergraduate student in the environmental engineering program at the University of Colorado Boulder with a passion for global development and climate change work. She has assisted civil engineering doctoral student Shaye Palagi on her research in decision making processes during post disaster relocation. During this time, she aided in data collection and analysis, while also working on her own research focusing on hazard mapping and survey data that can be utilized to measure exposure to natural hazards. Her paper, “Measuring Exposure for a Better Tomorrow: An Analysis of Hazard Mapping and Survey Data as Methods to Measure Risk” won the Natural Hazards Center Student Paper Competition in 2018.

In the future, she hopes to collaborate with communities around the world to create sustainable climate change and energy solutions. She is an active member of Engineers Without Borders Nepal and has co-led a design team to create a menstrual hygiene management friendly latrine to help girls feel more comfortable at school. When not studying, Sydney loves to spend time in the mountains hiking or in coffee shops writing novels.
