Mitigating against disaster matters more than ever. As we continue to experience more frequent disasters, factors such as aging infrastructure, poor land use planning practices, and social and economic inequalities are contributing to the toll taken on U.S. communities.
Effective mitigation requires strong physical infrastructure, but also a robust social infrastructure that can support practitioners, planners, and policy makers as they address risk and invest in solutions to enhance community well-being.
Evidence-based information can help mitigation professionals do this important work. That is why the Natural Hazards Center is again partnering with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Science Foundation to offer our third call for Mitigation Matters Research proposals.

This year’s call is interested in mitigation research in one or more of the following areas:
- Building Codes
- Technical Assistance
- Community Needs
- Equitable and Inclusive Mitigation Practices
- Hazard Mitigation or Climate-Focused Adaptation
- Mitigation Workforce
- Mitigation Success Stories
Up to 10 awards of $10,000 each will be funded. Proposals are due by December 4, 2023.
