Since the beginning of 2024, more than 850 tornadoes have struck the United States, including about 45 strong enough to cause significant damage and, in some cases, loss of life. As the reports of these events continue to roll out, it is evident that research is needed to limit the toll they take on people and communities—especially those that are socially vulnerable and at risk of experiencing disproportionate impacts.
With even more tornadoes expected in the coming months, the Natural Hazards Center would like to remind the research community that there are funds available to assist with this important work. Those interested in pursuing studies related to tornadoes should consider applying for a Tornado Ready Research and Data Publication research award.
The awards support research and the publication of data, instruments, and protocols related to tornado research, particularly those focused on places that house or serve socially marginalized populations, such as schools, nursing homes, correctional facilities, or manufactured homes.
Awards range from $1,250 to $15,000. Proposal will be accepted through August 9, 2024. A recorded Q&A about submissions and requirements is also available.
Tornado Ready Research Awards are part of the Weather Ready Research Award Program possible with the support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Severe Storms Laboratory in partnership with the NOAA Weather Program Office, National Weather Service, and the National Science Foundation.
