Acknowledgments
The Research Counts series was born out of a desire to share key hazards and disaster research findings with a broader audience and ensure that knowledge is available to those who need it most. Therefore, the pieces in the series are brief and written to be used by a wide range of practitioners, policy makers, journalists, and others concerned with understanding disasters and reducing their toll.
In 2026, the Natural Hazards Center teamed up with the Bill Anderson Fund to publish this special collection on Equity and Inclusion in Disasters. We are grateful for the Bill Anderson Fund fellows, alums, and collaborators who wrote the pieces in this collection. The authors represent a wide range of disciplines and a diversity of perspectives, but they all share a common commitment to advancing equitable approaches to disaster risk reduction, response, and recovery.
We gratefully acknowledge the Margaret A. Cargill Philanthropies (MACP), which has an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. MACP provided funding, which allowed us to develop the online and print versions of this collection. We are especially grateful to Erin Coryell and Bren Hampton for their integrity and ability to help move research to practice.
Jeffrey Gunderson, who is the web and data manager for the Natural Hazards Center, played a significant role in developing and publishing the online version of the special collection. Jocelyn West and Zoe Lefkowitz, both graduate research assistants at the Natural Hazards Center, supported the final production of the collection through compiling references and proofreading several articles. Dana Stillman of Inspire Graphic Design expertly led the design work and layout for the print version of the collection.
We deeply appreciate you reading and sharing this Special Collection on Equity and Inclusion in Disasters.
Thank you for taking this research and making it count.
