Public Attitudes Toward Disaster Risk Reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean

Tue. 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Centennial F

This session will examine questions of disaster risk reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean that probe the relationship between attitudes toward DRR and the perceptions of state capacity, security, and trust. Based on research from the Vanderbilt University Latin American Public Opinion Project and the Florida International University Extreme Events Institute, panelists will present findings that indicate that perceptions of state capacity are important for the public to prioritize safer homes, that victimization by corruption erodes support for DRR, and that education levels are not as strongly predictive of DRR support as is commonly thought.
