Recent years have underscored the severity of wildfire risk in the United States. This escalating risk points to an urgent need for actionable research on wildfires and fire weather, as well as the need to publish existing wildfire data and fire weather specific datasets is also needed.

With this in mind, the Natural Hazards Center—with support from the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Program Office, and the National Weather Service—is issuing a special call for proposals for Wildfire Ready Quick Response Research and Data Publication.

Please read the special call in its entirety, which includes information about how to submit a proposal, deadlines and deliverables, and how the funding will be distributed. You can also view a recorded Q&A session that we hosted on August 23, 2022, for more information.

Funds will be available for three tiers of awards focusing on various topics:

Tier 1: $1,000 to $7,500
This tier will support individual researchers or teams studying pre-wildfire activities, such as weather forecasting, or determining baselines for wildfire risk perception, preparedness, mitigation.

Tier 2: $1,000 to $7,500
This tier will support individual researchers or teams studying activities during and after wildfire, such as fire weather alerts and warnings, evacuation decision-making, or wildfire impacts, displacement, rebuilding, and recovery.

Tier 3: $1,250 to $2,500
This tier will support wildfire and/or fire weather instrument and data publication on the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure Designsafe platform.

Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis through December 31, 2022.

This call for research is part of the Weather Ready Research Award Program. Please visit the program web page to learn about other Weather Ready Research funding opportunities, read Weather Ready Research reports, and see what studies are forthcoming.
