Why People Don't Engage in Disaster Preparedness (and What to Do About It)
Research indicates that people don't always engage in disaster preparedness or mitigation - even when they have sufficient resources, preparedness training, or a history of disaster exposure. Panelists have found that various factors appear to influence engagement in preparedness for disaster-prone Haitians, communities in flood-prone areas of Nepal and India, and survivors of the 2013 Colorado floods - including local refugee communities. In light of increasing financial commitment to disaster risk reduction worldwide, examination of factors with the potential to assist or hinder is crucial. This session will examine the state of current research on engagement in disaster preparedness from interdisciplinary perspectives, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, and emergency management.
