Ethics Graphic

We are pleased to announce that registration for the 48th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop is now open. Our program this year focuses on the theme of Ethical Action for Disaster Risk Reduction.

This year’s Workshop will again be held in person. We hope you will join us for the Workshop July 9-12 and either of our add-on meetings: the Researchers Meeting on July 12-13 or the Practitioners Meeting on July 13.

Keynote: This year’s opening keynote speaker, Michael Paul Nelson, is a professor of environmental philosophy and ethics at Oregon State University. He has more than 25 years of experience engaging with environmental ethics topics across multiple disciplines and has been the author of many publications and books, including Moral Ground: Ethical Action for a Planet in Peril. His keynote address will discuss how we can integrate robust data and information with clearly articulated, well-reasoned values to address the challenges we face now and in the near future.

Program: Thanks to the many thoughtful suggestions we received, we have crafted a preliminary schedule that highlights the interconnections between facts and values, our ethical obligations to the communities we serve, and topical issues in disasters of all kinds. We will also host a number of trainings, listening sessions, roundtable events, and other opportunities for networking.

Registration: Registration is now open, so please register soon! All Workshop sessions will be held in-person at the Omni Interlocken Resort in Broomfield, Colorado. If you can’t be with us, please consider registering to watch the livestream of the keynote address and all four plenary sessions.

Additional Opportunities: Learn more about the 9th Annual Bill Anderson Fund Disaster Dash! The 5K fun run or walk will be virtual again this year, so you can join from anywhere in the world. Also, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit their research to the Student Paper Competition—the deadline is May 15.

Researchers Meeting: This year we are again collaborating with the International Sociological Association Research Committee on Disasters (ISA-RC39) to host an add-on Researchers Meeting from July 12-13. All are welcome and encouraged to join the meeting, which will focus on New Frontiers of Disaster Research: Action-Oriented Approaches to Solve Complex Challenges.

Practitioners Meeting: The National Hazard Mitigation Association will again join us in hosting the annual Practitioners Meeting on July 13. Emergency managers, mitigation practitioners, and others who are concerned with reducing hazard risk are invited to attend. The theme of this year’s meeting is Demonstrating the Value of Mitigation in Achieving Community Resilience.

Updates or Questions: Please notify us of any changes to your email address or subscription preferences on our sign-up page. You can also get Workshop updates and the latest in hazards news from our Twitter feed. If you have questions or require additional information, please email us at: hazards.workshop@colorado.edu.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Workshop this summer as we come together to contemplate how we can apply an ethical action framework to help reduce the harm and suffering caused by disasters.
