We are pleased to announce that registration for the 46th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop is now open. Our program this year focuses on the theme of The Hazards and Disaster Workforce: Preparing to Meet 21st Century Challenges.

This year’s Workshop will again be held virtually. We hope you will join us for the Workshop July 11-14 and the Researchers Meeting that follows July 14-15.

Keynote: This year’s opening keynote speaker, Chauncia Willis, is the co-founder and CEO of the Institute for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Management. She is an emergency manager, professional coach, and cultural diversity professional with more than 20 years of experience, as well as the author of Stretching: The Race towards Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in America. Her keynote address will provide an introduction to the challenges and opportunities associated with growing and diversifying the hazards and disaster workforce.

Program: Thanks to the many thoughtful suggestions we received, we have crafted a schedule that highlights efforts aimed at cultivating a demographically diverse and highly skilled workforce. To that end, the plenary and concurrent sessions will help us to carefully consider gaps in workforce development, as well as to chart a strategy that ensures we are ready to reduce disaster risk and promote collective well-being. We will again host a number of special training sessions, roundtable events, and other opportunities for networking.

Registration: Registration is now open, so please register soon! All Workshop sessions will be streamed live, allowing for maximum audience interaction through the virtual platform. Please note that we will also record and post all sessions so they can be viewed at the times that are most convenient for registrants. If you have colleagues who would like to attend the Workshop, we ask that you share this email and encourage them to register as well!

Submissions: Submissions for the Workshop Poster Sessions, Research and Practice Highlights, and the New Reads—Meet the Authors event are due June 11. Please read the guidelines and consider submitting so that other Workshop attendees can learn about your work. All abstracts and highlights will be published online.

Additional Opportunities: Please sign up for the 7th Annual Bill Anderson Fund Disaster Dash! The 5K fun run or walk will be virtual again this year, so you can join from anywhere in the world. Also, undergraduate and graduate students are invited to submit their research to the Student Paper Competition—the deadline is June 11.

Researchers Meeting: This year we are again collaborating with the International Sociological Association Research Committee on Disasters (ISA-RC39) to host an add-on Researchers Meeting on July 14-15. All are welcome and encouraged to join the meeting, which will focus on Advances in Longitudinal Disaster Recovery Research.

Practitioners Meeting: We are thrilled that the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association is again hosting its annual Practitioners Meeting on July 15. Emergency managers, mitigation practitioners, and others who are concerned with reducing hazard risk are invited to attend. The theme of this year’s meeting is Building Community Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction. Registration for this add-on meeting is free.

Updates or Questions: Please notify us of any changes to your email address or subscription preferences on our sign-up page. You can also get Workshop updates and the latest in hazards news from our Twitter feed. If you have questions or require additional information, please email us at: hazards.workshop@colorado.edu.

We look forward to welcoming you to the virtual Workshop this summer as we come together to clarify the role that our workforce will continue to play in creating a more just and sustainable world.
