Practitioners Meeting

The Natural Hazards Center is pleased to announce that the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association will once again hold their annual NHMA Practitioners Meeting on July 15, 2021 following the main Natural Hazards Workshop. The theme of this year's meeting is Building Community Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction. Registration is free.

Building Community Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction

The theme of this year’s meeting is Building Community Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction. This theme was chosen to highlight innovative and practical community resilience activities. Program sessions and workshops will focus on fresh insights, broad visions, and inclusive management techniques that create fundamental change ensuring long-term resilience in communities at home and abroad. It also reflects that mitigation and resiliency measures take place at the community level—it is therefore imperative that we facilitate the participation of the whole community.

Sessions will encourage thoughts on how the roles of education, awareness, and commitment to whole community resilience can affect changes at the federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial level. Through active engagement on these topics, the Natural Hazard Mitigation Association hopes to build on the momentum of mitigation and resilience activities and measures, recently increased federal funding, collaboration, networking, and the goals of true convergence.

Meeting participants have the opportunity to learn from each other and some of the nation’s brightest mitigation subject matter experts. We will collectively tackle difficult issues such as risk awareness, environmental and economic uncertainty, sustainable recovery, and furthering diversity, inclusion, and environmental justice in disaster management.

This meeting will feature an opening plenary session and four concurrent workshop sessions that allow attendees to learn and share their thoughts on specific topics. Attendees will be able to drop into concurrent sessions as they prefer, and facilitators will provide session overviews for those who are not able to attend. Sessions will also be recorded for future viewing*.

*Sessions at the 2021 Practitioners Meeting will be video recorded. Recordings may be shared via the NHMA website, newsletter, social media outlets, or in other materials created by NHMA. Attendance at the event implies consent to be recorded for these purposes.
