Plenary: The Relevance of Culture in Disaster: Expanding the Boundaries of Research and Practice

Wed. 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Interlocken A/B

More than ever, the study of disaster is growing to include many different disciplines. With that comes a growing momentum to recognize how cultural systems can dramatically enhance the understanding of vulnerability and resilience and improve all phases of practice. Panelists will discuss the potential benefits and barriers that culture creates from perspectives in cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, social psychology, mental health, and public health, as well as draw on research and practical experience in the context of multi-cultural U.S. cities and internationally.
