Keynote: Bill Hooke

American Meteorological Society

Bill Hooke is the associate executive director of the American Meteorological Society and the author of the Living on the Real World blog, as well as the book of the same name. His policy research interests include natural disaster reduction, historical precedents in relation to present-day policies, and the implications of changing national requirements for weather and climate science and services.

Hooke previously served in many roles for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, including the Deputy Chief Scientist and Acting Chief Scientist. He was director of the United States Weather Research Program Office from 1993-2000 and Chair of the interagency Subcommittee for Natural Disaster Reduction of the National Science and Technology Council Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

Hooke is a member of the American Philosophical Society and chairs the National Academies of Science Disasters Roundtable, as well as serving on the International Council for Science Planning Group on Natural and Human-Induced Environmental Hazards and Disasters.
