Before the ShakeAlert® Earthquake Early Warning System was rolled out in Washington, Oregon, and California, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) coordinated a group of social scientists interested in earthquake early warning and the new system about to be implemented. This USGS Social Science Working Group explored questions related to the system—including what people understood about and expected from ShakeAlert® and if they knew what to do when an alert was received—as well as other earthquake early warning-related topics. This panel will discuss the extensive research produced by the group, as well as the benefits of applying social science research to implementation efforts.
