Expanding the Science Base for Actionable Risk Communication and Protective Action Guidance for the Public

Risk communication and relevant protective action guidance are key factors in meeting the challenge of motivating the U.S. population to take action for individual and community resilience. A FEMA review of research validation for hazard protective actions has identified research gaps, changes in guidance, and policy issues that impact the behavioral strategies needed for a resilient public. This panel will present current priorities and challenges for the science -based understanding of risk and protective actions for hazard scenarios.
