Socially and economically disadvantaged populations are disproportionately impacted by disaster, have more limited access to recovery resources, and often take longer to recover—or not recover at all—from disasters. This is especially true in terms of climate change and environmental disasters. Residents of environmental justice neighborhoods generally have high levels of uncertainty, distrust, and suspicion about research related to the natural hazard vulnerabilities and environmental conditions in their communities. To rebuild trust and promote resilience, it is imperative to increase local government awareness of social inequity and the actions that can be taken to ameliorate it. This panel will discuss challenges, opportunities, and resources for local governments looking to garner confidence in resilience solutions throughout their community.
